The use of Unity Candles is an established ritual in church and non-religious weddings, and many celebrants welcome the use of candles as a meaningful focus during the ceremony. The bride and groom, their mothers or other chosen family members, each hold a side candle and together light the larger main candle, symbolising the coming together of two individuals as one and the unifying of their families. Alternatively, a set of matching taper candles may be used to light the side candles and then transfer the flame across to the main candle.
